What kind of stories, you ask?
Original, well crafted, thoughtfully conceived stories with strong characterization depicting the complexities and depths of the diverse human experience. That said, your story should be in dynamic, well thought out science fiction or fantasy settings- Earthlike and beyond. We like enthralling tales of A.I. aliens, alien invasions, dragons, witches, magic, transhumanism, Afrofuturism, steampunk, robots, mutants, the post -apocalyptic, and superpowers. We’re looking for captivating prose that grabs the reader from the first paragraph to the last!
What gets the stink eye?
Stereotypical elves, dwarves, goblins, orcs, trolls, aged wizards, muscle-bound swords people. Costless violence that does not help the story progress. Hyper-sexualized content that crosses over into pornography. Libelous, racist and homophobic content. Any of these shall be quickly catapulted into the slush pile and metaphorically incinerated.
Nuts & Bolts
You love it, we love it, now, inspire our readers to love it as well.
We’re looking for poems that run the gamut from the fantastical to the historical. We’re purposefully casting far and wide for poems of varying styles and subjects. If they are well crafted, intriguing poems that do the heavy lifting of drawing the reader into different perspectives, then we’re all in.
Are there such things as speculative poems? If you write it, it is. Can you highlight a moment in history, apply your unique sense of verve and make that moment come alive?
We’re looking for just that kind of impactful sophistication.
Send us up to five unpublished poems, with a submission no longer than a total of ten pages. We prefer Times New Roman font.
We pay upon acceptance, $55 per story and $15 per poem. Authors must be able to receive payment through Paypal.
Upon acceptance, we request first and indefinite archival rights, after which all other rights revert to the author. Please credit Rat ‘n’ Rooster Journal of Speculative Fiction & Poetry as the first publisher if you reprint elsewhere.
